When we first arrived into Edinburgh we purchased a round-trip ticket for the Lothian "AirLink Express 24/7 100 Bus", Airport to City Center. This bus runs every 10 minutes around the clock between the airport and Edinburgh City Center including stopping right near our hotel at Haymarket. Round-trip is only 7.50 GBP. There are plenty of racks on the bus for luggage. Since we took this bus to get from the airport to our hotel, we took the same bus to head back to the airport.

Another option would have been to take Edinburgh Tram between the airport and our hotel. However, when we booked our flights we weren't exactly sure how often the tram operated, where to get the tram at the airport, or how close the tram station was to our hotel. The AirLink Bus 100 worked out fine but the tram would probably have been just as good as the tram stop was just as close to our hotel as the bus stop.

We flew using rewards points on United Airlines. We like United Airlines as we have access to the United Club Lounges and can check up to two 50 pound bags of luggage each for free. Our return destination was our vacation house in Anaheim, California. We always debate whether to try to book a non-stop to Los Angeles and then ride in a taxi or Uber for an hour to our house, or to change planes and fly directly into John Wayne Airport in Orange County which is only about a 20 minute ride from our house.

If I remember correctly, I don't think there were any non-stop United Airlines flights from Edinburgh to Los Angeles on the day we wanted to fly. So, since we were going to have to change planes anyway, we decided to change planes in Chicago to a flight that would arrive into Orange County. At least that way we would avoid the mess of traffic that is always at the Los Angeles Airport and avoid the expensive long ride from Los Angeles to our house in Anaheim.
